South West season off to an exciting start as Galley win both senior races

GALLEY FLASH Rowing Club pulled off a sensational double at Glandore coastal regatta last Sunday.

Both their senior men and senior ladies’ crews took gold in this, the first of South West rowing’s five championship regattas.

Kilmacsimon were their main challengers, taking silver in both races. Reigning South West champions, Courtmacsherry senior men, won bronze, as did Castletownbere’s senior ladies.

The Castletownbere club had a great regatta all round as their senior-mixed crew won gold in the other senior race of the regatta, while their U14 ladies won silver.

Kilmacsimon won the club of the day award. In addition to winning two silvers in the senior races, they took gold in U18 ladies and junior ladies, silver in both the pre-veteran men’s and ladies races and also in the veteran men’s category. They took bronze in the veteran ladies and U12 boys’ races.

Kilmacabea put in an exceptional performance, winning four gold, including both U12 codes, as well as in the pre-veteran and veteran ladies’ categories.  They also won silver in junior men and bronze in junior ladies.

Rosscarbery was the top club at underage, also winning four gold, U14 and U16 ladies, U14 and U18 men.  They also won silver in U12 boys.

Myross won two gold, in the junior and veteran men’s categories, silver in U12 and junior ladies, and bronze in both U14 codes.

Courtmacsherry had success at each underage group, with gold for their U16 boys, silver for U14 boys, and bronze for both U12 girls and U18 men.  Their senior men also took bronze.

Ring won ten medals in total, three silver in U16 and U18 men and in the veteran ladies’ category, as well as seven bronze.

Back to Galley Flash, in addition to their two senior golds, they also won gold in pre-veteran men, silver in the U16 and U18 ladies and senior mixed categories.  Their U16 boys won bronze.

Next stop is Union Hall this Sunday for round two of the South West rowing championships.  It will be interesting to see if the other clubs can knock Galley off the top in the senior categories.
