BANDON Grammar School student Brian O’Mahony has been selected to travel with the Irish U17 team to the European Championships in Lubin, Poland on March 17th.

This will be Brian’s fourth cap for Ireland.

The highly-rated West Cork badminton ace has been competing on the national circuit since September to fulfil his selection criteria.

The Munster Open was his last competition where he came back to Cork with gold in the doubles with his partner Adam McAllister (Roscommon), as well as a silver medal in the singles, losing out to the top seed.

With a quarter-final place in the mixed doubles in an English gold tournament in Milton Keynes, Brian completed his selection criteria.

Meanwhile, he played his part as Lakewood Badminton Club (Ballincollig) won the All-Ireland club championship in Galway.

This cup is in existence since 1908 and this is the first time a Cork club has won it. The last time this cup came to a Munster club was over 80 years ago in 1935 when Limerick won it.

The victorious Lakewood team included Gemma Tobin, Ciara O’Connor, Ann Murphy, Lucy Kerrins, Gary O’Sullivan (captain), Zain Ali, Eoin Walsh and Brian O’Mahony.
