KINSALE golfer John Murphy has been named on the initial 26-strong Britain & Ireland squad for September’s Walker Cup against the USA at Royal Liverpool.
Murphy (20) is one of five Irish golfers included on the extended panel that will be narrowed down to the ten-man Walker Cup team in August.
Last year was a breakthrough year for Murphy who shot to prominence after he won the St Andrews Links Trophy, represented Ireland in the European and World Amateur Team Championships and was named 2018 Munster Senior Golfer of the Year.
Regards the Walker Cup, Murphy told The Southern Star at the end of 2018: ‘It’s been a dream of mine to play in it and I put myself in a good position, especially being picked for the St Andrews Trophy, which is as close as you can get in an even-numbered year. All I can do is play as well as I can.
‘I’ll be based in Europe for the summer and am really looking forward to going there and playing.’
Murphy is in his second year at the University of Louisville.
