CARBERY’S hopes of an extended run in the county senior camogie championship were ended by a late Eimear McAndrew point for Douglas.

The city side trailed for 55 minutes of this round-three game at a blustery Castle Road before Katrina Mackey pushed them one clear when she pointed a 20-metre free.

That lead was short-lived as Orla Cronin pointed a free to tie up the proceedings one minute later.

But just as the game rolled in injury time, McAndrew scored from distance, and Carbery then saw a tricky late free from the right sail wide of the posts.

Carbery had opened brightly when both Kate Wall and the lively Caroline Sugrue pointed.

The experienced Katrina Mackey pulled one back for Douglas but points from Cronin and Sugrue point had Carbery three clear before McAndrew narrowed the gap to two.

After Wall pointed again for Carbery, Douglas struck for a goal when Mackey finished after good work from Julia White.

Carbery’s response was two points from Moira Barrett and Ciara O’Sullivan, only for Mackey to cut the deficit to the slimmest.

Carbery opened up a four-point lead after 22 minutes when Sugrue put O’Sullivan through with a great pass and she unleashed a shot that gave Jessica Kavanagh no chance in the Douglas goal.

Reduced the gap

A Cronin long-range free stretched the Carbery lead to five before Sarah Fahy and Mackey reduced the gap to three by the break, 1-8 to 1-5.

Douglas chipped away at the Carbery lead in the second half and with eight minutes left, the sides were level, 1-11 apiece.

This is when Mackey and Cronin swapped placed balls, and with the game in the balance and both sides vying for victory it was McAndrew who pointed with a long-range effort to give Douglas the lead.

Cronin had an opportunity to tie up proceedings and send the game to extra time, however her tight-angled placed ball went wide of the target as Douglas move into the quarter-finals.
