WEST Cork captain Aine Hayes (pictured) scored a late free as the divisional side edged out St Vals by 3-10 to 3-9 in their second group game of the Cork senior ladies’ football championship on Tuesday night in Kilmurry.
In a tight game, the sides were level at half time, 2-3 to 1-6, with West Cork’s Áine O’Sullivan scoring a goal in either half and 2-3 in total while wing back Dara Kiely finished with 1-1.
Cork minor Laura O’Mahony scored three points as West Cork made it two wins from two games ahead of a derby clash against Kinsale next Tuesday night.
‘This was a great team performance, from the players who started to the subs who came on. Everyone worked their socks off. Defensively we were very good and we had an excellent work ethic from the start to the finish,’ said manager Brian McCarthy.
Of interest with St Vals, Briege Corkery started in goal but was brought out the field in the closing stages and she was replaced between the posts by Bríd Stack.
