THE Carbery board has shelved plans to build a state-of-the-art 4G pitch in West Cork.

Earlier this year the board set up a sub committee to explore the feasibility of providing a 4G all-weather pitch on an existing site within a club in the Carbery division or on a green-field site.

But those plans have now been placed on hold, explains Carbery GAA development officer Don Desmond in his report to the division’s AGM.

‘A number of locations were identified as possible sites but the huge cost involved in building and maintaining such a pitch had members pouring cold water on any such development in the near future,’ Desmond explains.

‘It was felt initially that such a pitch would be invaluable in the early months of the year when most fields would be unplayable after the winter rains and thereby would result in league fixtures to be fulfilled and not fall foul of the weather.

‘However, with the advent of more and more sand-based pitches in the division, the overwhelming view was these would obviate the need of going down the road of a 4G pitch.’

But Desmond adds that the board has not dropped its plans to create a base for Carbery GAA in the division.

‘The feasibility of having a base within the Carbery division where records, minute books, cups that have been taken out of service and memorabilia belonging to the division could be stored and viewed along with other historical assets.

‘It would be nice to have this base by the centenary of the Carbery board in 2025,’ Desmond says.
