AWARD-winning artist and An Post stamp designer Ann Flynn’s beautiful collection of paintings, ‘Shimmering Light’, featuring children at play on the beach and coastal scenes around West Cork, is on display at the Montenotte Hotel in Cork city during August and September.
Ann is primarily a figurative painter and her more recent exploration into landscapes and seascapes is a new source of joy to her.
‘I’m often asked if I am obsessed with water and did I grow up by the sea,’ Ann said.
‘I suppose those things are true, but really what motivates me is light and the effect of sunlight on those elements, be it water, a child’s hair, or sun shining through a plastic bucket – a favourite.’
Ann has also designed and illustrated a number of projects for An Post, including postage stamps. She created the winning designs for the 1988 Irish Olympic stamps, which later went on to win the overall Prix Olympia Gold Medal awarded by the International Olympic Committee, winning over all the other countries that issued stamps for the games that year.
The original Olympic Gold Medal which was awarded now resides in the An Post archives.
