THE Skibbereen branch had the privilege of participating in a vibrant musical exchange that brought together two Comhaltas groups, Skibbereen and Killeigh, Offaly.

The exchange was the brainchild of Comhaltas member Lisa O’Mahony (student of Mary I Limerick) who, together with her friend Róisín O’Connor from Killeigh, forged the idea.

They were ably assisted by their other classmate and Skibbereen Comhaltas member Anna Collins.

Over 35 performers from Skibbereen stayed with host families around the Tullamore /Kelleigh area and from the moment they arrived they were welcomed with kindness and enthusiasm.

A set dancing workshop ably directed by Martina French was held.

The Skibbereen set was showcased and enjoyed by the hosts which was followed by a music session and quiz where members bonded with and exchanged tunes with their new friends.

When the planned walk of the Boora didn’t take place due to weather, everyone headed off to the Cork / Offaly match on Sunday. The Cork win didn’t affect proceedings!

The weekend concluded with a battle of the bands type competition in the impressive club house, Teach Ceoil, on Sunday evening.

A framed picture of Canon Goodman, music collector and former rector of Abbeystrewry was presented to chairperson and the new president of CCE, Attracta Brady.

The inscription ‘cuisle an cheoil a chothaíonn cairdeas’ the pulse of music preserves friendships, was apt and fitting after the group’s wonderful experience.

The branch would like to express its thanks to the Kelleigh branch for their kindness and friendship throughout the weekend and is looking forward to their return trip in the autumn.
