A search and rescue helicopter is undertaking a long range rescue mission involving a Russian fishing vessel off the south coast of Cork tonight.

A SEARCH and rescue helicopter is undertaking a long range rescue mission off the south coast of Cork tonight.

The Skipper magazine is reporting that a coastguard helicopter was despatched to assist an injured crew member aboard a Russian fishing vessel around 200 miles off the south coast.

'The alarm was raised by the vessel around 3.45pm this afternoon. Rescue helicopter 115 has been scrambled and a coastguard spokesperson said the delay in getting out to the stricken crewman was because the vessel was so far out at sea when the alarm was first raised,' according to the magazine.

The helicopter is being escorted out by a CASA plane stationed at Baldonnel aerodrome. It is believed the man has sustained a broken arm and some other injuries and may need to be winched up to safety.

'The spokesperson said the situation would be assessed when the crews reached the vessel,' according to The Skipper.

The helicopter had left its Shannon base after 7pm tonight and headed for the south coast.
