RUBBISH on Union Hall pier is attracting rats, according to local residents.

Lee Miles took to Twitter to complain about the state of the pier and to call on Cork County Council to clean it up because he fears it has become a health hazard.

He also posted photographs that show the rubbish that has been left on the pier, and complained that an unsecured oil facility has the potential to be an environmental hazard.

‘We are supposed to be on the Wild Atlantic Way,’ said Lee Miles. ‘This is a busy fishing pier that is also used by anglers and boat owners who take people out on wildlife tours.

‘But the place is in a heap: there are rats crawling around and it is an eyesore. Any visitor who saw the pier in its current state would hardly be in a hurry to return.’

Lee Miles said he believes that local guesthouse and bed and breakfast owners, as well as the local business community, would like to see the problem sorted out sooner rather than later.
