PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins will perform the official opening this Spring of the new Uileann West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen on a date to be announced. A special evening was held last Thursday to show its patrons and sponsors around the impressive new building in the town centre and they were thanked for their generosity by WCAC director Ann Davoren and board chairman Declan Tiernan, who stated that the centre was opening debt-free.

The occasion was marked by the unveiling of a new sculpture, called Caol by Michael Ray, incorporating the names of the main sponsors of the new centre. The first art exhibition in the building will open on January 31st.

Meanwhile, Rita O’Driscoll has been appointed as development manager at Uilinn. She took up her appointment on Monday, January 5th. Rita, a native of Skibbereen, and her husband, Frank, ran a lighting business in Bandon for many years and Rita established quite a reputation for herself as an interior designer, culminating in her appearing on national television.
