Plaque unveiled to Minihan in native Athy

West Cork-based photographer John Minihan was honoured in his native Athy in Co Kildare recently, as part of the ‘Made of Athy' music trail project.

West Cork-based photographer John Minihan was honoured in his native Athy in Co Kildare recently, as part of the ‘Made of Athy’ music trail project.

John was in attendance as a plaque was unveiled to make the occasion which was organised by the Arts department of Kildare County Council. 

 The ‘Made of Athy’ initiative highlights the many and varied music connections in the town and has already featured Jack L, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, the late piper Liam Óg Ó’Flynn and TV producer Bill Hughes.

 Minihan was raised in Athy but went to live in London at the age of 12.  

At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. Although he remained in London for 30 years, he returned to Athy every year, recording the people and their daily lives.  He now lives near Skibbereen.

Included in Minihan’s photography are images of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Little Richard.
