THE planning is already underway to welcome home Ireland’s Olympic rowing medallists – the lads from Lisheen,  Gary and Paul O’Donovan.

Monday, August 29th is the date to remember, as the local legends are bound to receive a massive warm welcome home, back where it all began.

Keen Skibbereen Rowing Club volunteers have already completed a paint job facelift (pictured, above) for the riverside venue, and local businesses in town are also beginning to start the homecoming makeover.

This week they launched their fundraising limited edition #Pulllikeadog t-shirts in aid of the club (see p2).

‘We’re so proud of the lads,’ fellow Skibbereen Rowing Club member and 16-time national champion Kenneth McCarthy said. ‘But you know there were three men in the boat out there on the water in Rio today – Dominic Casey, their coach  and mentor, was there as well, pulling just as hard as the lads.’

‘We are all looking forward to welcoming the lads home, but first Paul is in Rotterdam to compete in the World Championships along with a large contingent from the club,’ club president Nuala Lupton pointed out, ‘but after that competition, we’ll be getting ready for a night to remember in Skibbereen.’
