GARDAÍ in West Cork are calling on members of the public to contact them if they see drivers doing ‘doughnuts’ on the roads.

The call follows the latest series of the ringed marks which were made on the N71 road between Leap and Connonagh last weekend.

The straight stretch of road at Dromillihy Woods was blighted once again by black unsightly tyre marks. This stretch is a regular target for dare-devil drivers, it seems.

Supt Ger O’Mahony of Clonakilty Garda Station told The Southern Star that gardaí would urge anyone who witnesses drivers doing this on a public road to contact them immediately.

‘This is in fact dangerous driving and anyone caught engaging in it, if prosecuted and convicted, can be automatically disqualified,’ said Supt O’Mahony.

‘These drivers need to realise that they’re endangering other road users and themselves when engaging in this dangerous activity and gardaí in West Cork are targeting these drivers.’

This section of the N71 was covered extensively with black tyre marks around the same time last year. In fact,  parts of West Cork appear to be targeted as a playground for these ‘boy racers’ who are damaging the roads, while also putting themselves in danger by driving in this erratic manner.

The ‘doughnuts’ craze peaked around this time last year, when an unprecedented number of motorists engaged in the dangerous activity in places ranging from Drinagh to Beal na Bláth.

Gardaí in one instance caught a motorist engaging in ‘doughnuts’ near Rosscarbery and he was arrested and appeared in court where he was ordered to pay €500 to the court’s poor box, but avoided a conviction or disqualification from driving.
