A PUBLIC consultation process was launched at the Sheep’s Head and Bantry Tourism Co-operative’s recent AGM.

Siobhán Burke, the co-op’s marketing co-ordinator, said: ‘We will be holding meetings with local community groups, and open meetings too, so we can develop ideas and projects that are genuinely community-led.

‘It is only through this kind of process that we can develop the kind of tourism that works well for communities, and for our environment, as well as for the visitors we are seeking to attract.’

The members of the co-operative took the opportunity at their AGM to celebrate a successful year and the fact that they received special commendation at the Irish Tourism Industry Awards for their innovative, community-led approach.

The organisation also secured an Irish Responsible Tourism Award among other accolades for its work in an area already recognised as a European Destination of Excellence for sustainable tourism.

The co-op’s Living the Sheep’s Head Way marketing campaign has been very successful for the area, and behind the scenes, the co-op has been working with local business-owners to help them maximise the benefits of being located along the Wild Atlantic Way – an approach that has won praise from Fáilte Ireland.
