A fisherman on a West Cork registered trawler was airlifted to CUH via Cork Airport this morning.

The fisherman, a 32 year-old crewman aboard a local fishing trawler, was taken off the vessel in 3m swells off the coast of Mizen Head earlier today.

Valentia Coast Guard confirmed that the trawler requested assistance at 6.20am this morning. The Waterford-based Rescue 117 helicopter was tasked at 8:15am, and the crewman was evacuated from the boat at 8:54am, which was 18 miles south west of Mizen Head.

The helicopter landed at Cork Airport at 9:20am and the crewman was transferred by HSE ambulance to CUH in Wilton.

The medevac (medical evacuation) was carried out in 10-knot winds and a 3m swell, according to Valentia Coast Guard.

The fishing vessel continued on its journey to Castletownbere after the medevac was carried out.
