REQUESTS for additional street lighting were submitted to West Cork Municipal District ahead of the finalisation of the capital works programme in March, writes Jackie Keogh.

In a motion that covered Allihies to Schull, Cllr Finbarr Harrington (Ind) called on Cork County Council to include extra street lights at the former garda station in Goleen, which has been transformed into two social housing units.

He also requested an extension to the street lighting at Altar in Toormore; an extension of the street lighting at West End Castletownbere to include The Rock housing estate; and an extension to the street lighting at the top of Allihies village on the R575 towards the L4904 to include the housing estate in that area.

Cllr Harrington also asked when the additional street lights, which have already been approved for Adrigole, will be installed.

Cllr Daniel Sexton (Ind Ire) made the point that modern street lighting does not seem to give the same level of illumination as the previous lights, so more lamps are needed.

The councillor asked for a review of the level of lighting in the town boundaries throughout West Cork, claiming they all need to be extended.

Executive engineer, Kevin Lynch, informed Cllr Harrington that his public lighting requests have been added to the municipal district list of requests.

He noted that all requests will be based upon assessment and budget constraints.
