SERIOUS subsidence on the roadway at Sparrograda, near Ballydehob, was fixed by Cork County Council in November, but locals had hoped for more extensive road resurfacing works.

Cllr Caroline Cronin (FG) made the comment at a recent meeting of the Western Division of Cork County Council saying she welcomed the two-week road closure, and the skilful buttressing of the roadway.

But she said the local authority had missed an opportunity to do more extensive resurfacing works once the job was complete.

Eoin McCarthy, engineer at the Cork National Roads office, described as ‘huge’ the level of road-side subsidence that the local authority had to deal with before the end of November.

Cllr Cronin paid tribute to the council engineers, and all those working in the roads department, saying: ‘There was a lot of excellent work done throughout West Cork this year.’

She said the residents of Schull are particularly pleased with the fine new footpath to Cadogan’s Strand.

The Fine Gael councillor said people are also happy with the way the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) is progressing.

The scheme is for roads that are not in the charge of Cork County Council, but residents can apply to have new surfaces, provided they contribute to the cost.

During a discussion about regional and national roads, Cllr Cronin warned that Colla Road in Schull is in really bad condition.

‘I understand that it is being done in stages, but the full length of the road needs to be done,’ she said.
