Clonakilty’s Scoil na mBuachaillí became the site of a heartwarming rescue when staff saved an injured herring gull, writes Martin Steinmetz.
The rescue adventure began after a report of a gull seen limping around the school’s car park near the playground on O’Rahilly Street. SNAs Claire and Marguerite sprang into action to safely capture the confused bird.
It was not an easy undertaking for them, as the gull put up a fight and pecked a finger or two.

But once tamed it was taken home by one of the SNAs, wrapped up in a blanket in front of the fire overnight.

Claire cared for James with love and attention, providing injuries treatment, fresh water, tuna, and soothing baths.
The bird was then dried and settled into a cozy bed crafted from cardboard and straw to help with its recovery.
And the gull, nicknamed James by pupils at the school, is now flying on the wings of kindness.
Principal Norma Harte said: ‘Thanks to our SNAs’ quick thinking and gentle care, James the Gull is now well on the way to recovery – a perfect example of the compassion and kindness shown every day at Scoil na mBuachaillí.
‘The staff in SNB are not only incredibly caring, but also wonderful role models for the pupils – showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference.’
Clonakilty Tidy Towns praised the effort on social media, saying: ‘Just amazing, what kindness and education to your incredible students. Well done.’
