‘THIS is a tremendous honour that caps off one of our greatest-ever seasons’ – they are the words of Bandon GAA chairman Colman O’Mahony when he learned that Bandon GAA Club has been selected as the 2016 Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Club of the Year.

The many successes of 2016 mark the year out as one of the most memorable in Bandon GAA, as the dual club captured two county titles in one magical October week.

Bandon hurlers won the Cork PIHC final to win promotion up to the senior ranks while the club’s footballers won the Cork IFC crown to move up to premier intermediate level for 2017, and as well as that Bandon also won an U14 county hurling championship and an U16 ladies’ football championship, plus numerous other underage titles.

On and off the field, Bandon GAA made great strides in 2016 and hit the headlines for all the right reasons throughout the year, making them worthy winners of the coveted Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Club of the Year award.

‘We are thrilled to accept this award and this is recognition of all the hard and great work that everybody in this club does,’ a delighted chairman Colman O’Mahony said.

‘Last year was a great year for the club, one of our best ever, and there was one week in October when we actually held five county titles – the three titles we won in 2016 as well as two we had won in 2015 (junior and minor football).’

Bandon follow in the footsteps of Newcestown GAA Club and Skibbereen Rowing Club in winning this award, which will be presented to club officials at the gala awards night in the Celtic Ross Hotel on Saturday, January 21st, starting at 7pm. Tickets (€35 per person) are available to the public by contacting Emma in the Celtic Ross on 023-8848722.

On the night, the 2016 Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Star will be revealed, while in the next two editions of The Southern Star, we will unveil the 2016 West Cork Youth Sports Star plus the winner of the new award, the Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Team of the Year. Exciting times ahead.
