SUPERVALU West Cork Schoolboys and Schoolgirls League clubs experienced contrasting fortunes in the opening rounds of the SFAI National Cups last weekend.

Castlelack proved too strong for Ardfield Hurricanes in an all-WCSSL SFAI U12 National Schoolboys Cup tie at Brinny. Simon Crewe scored four, Gavin Kerr netted a hat-trick while Nicholas Lynch and Aran Twomey were also on target for the winners. Castlelack will be away to either Rockmount or Buttevant in round two, the same round Riverside Athletic will host Leeside United.

There was disappointment for both Clonakilty AFC teams who exited the U12 National Cup despite battling performances. Clonakilty Rovers held Lismore to a 0-0 draw before losing 4-1 on penalties. James McCarthy and Hughie McAuley were on target in Clonakilty Wanderers 3-2 defeat at home to Mallow.

Cappoquin Railway proved too strong for Lyre Rovers, knocking the West Cork side out of the competition following a 4-0 win.

Joshua Bobrowski (2), Colin Ronan (2), Leo Pezza (2), Haris Harte Abbas, Conor Browne, Oisin Cullinane and James Barry strikes sealed Ardfield’s impressive 10-1 U13 Schoolboys National Cup first round victory away to Los Zarcos. The WCCSL club are away to Ballincollig in round two.

In the same competition, Lucca O’Donovan’s hat-trick and Darragh Hennessy’s strike cemented Clonakilty AFC’s 4-3 triumph away to Valley Rangers. Douglas Hall A will host the Ballyvackey club in round two following their 4-2 win over Bay Rovers. Douglas Hall’s other entrant ended Lyre Rovers’ interest following a 6-0 defeat of the West Cork side.

Riverside Athletic are through to round two of the U13 Schoolboys National Cup following a terrific win away to Cappoquin Railway.

It was 3-3 after extra-time before Athletic emerged 4-2 winners on penalties. Eanna O’Sullivan, Dan Brady and Rian O’Mahony scored for Riverside.

Castlelack will host Corinthian Boys A in the SFAI U15 National Schoolboys Cup second round following last weekend’s 8-2 defeat of Wilton United A. Jack Allen scored six times with Declan Kerr and John Smithers also on target. 

Carrigaline United A defeated Clonakilty AFC 5-1 while Lismore ended Lyre Rovers interest in the same competition following a 2-0 defeat in Lyre.

Luke O’Regan netted Clonakilty AFC’s only goal in their 5-1 SFAI U16 National Schoolboys Cup opening round loss at home to Wilton United A. Macroom edged Castlelack 1-0 in their opening round clash in Macroom.
