THE Skibbereen CS girls’ U18 sevens rugby team gave an excellent account of themselves at the national finals at Energia Park (Donnybrook Stadium).

While there was disappointment in losing to a last-minute try against Enniskillen Royal GS in the plate semi-final, the Skibb team, which had impressed in emerging from Munster, can be incredibly proud of their efforts all year.

One of four Munster teams to qualify, Skibb lost their first match against Sacred Heart of Westport, then beat Magh Ene of Bundoran by four tries to two, and in the crunch game against cup holders Gorey CS in the final group game, Niamh Thornton scored a late winning try to book Skibb’s place in the plate competition.

Enniskillen proved a step too far in the plate semi-final, but nevertheless, Skibb acquitted themselves so well and were a credit to them and their coach Sana Govender.
