The annual Skibbereen Road Race and Walk has undergone a makeover.

THE annual Skibbereen Road Race and Walk has undergone a makeover.

Organisers have settled on a new date and a new format in an effort to generate interest in an event that has the potential to be one of the most popular in the county.

With up to €1,500 in prize money on offer, mark the date of Sunday, November 18th into your calendar now.

In the past few years, Skibbereen AC held its showpiece event in August but they’ve switched to November, and also replaced the 10km distance with two new races – over five miles and ten miles – as well as a five-mile walk. The overall winner of the ten-mile race will receive the Noreen McCarthy Perpetual Memorial Cup.

The day starts at 11.30am and both races and the walk start and finish at the entrance to the O’Donovan Rossa GAA grounds.

Organisers also feel that the new courses – mostly flat with a few gradual pulls to challenge the more experienced runner – will prove very popular with both runners and walkers.

The races are open to runners and walkers of all abilities. The entry fees are as follows: five miles, €15; ten miles, €20; walk, €10. You can entre online at www.skibbac.com and also on race day from 9.30am. Pre-race registration and changing facilities at O’Donovan Rossa GAA grounds.
