Skibbereen rowers are through to Friday's Olympic final

BY KIERAN McCARTHY

SKIBBEREEN brothers Gary and Paul O’Donovan have qualified for the A final of the men’s lightweight double sculls at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The Lisheen brothers came third in their heat, behind France and the USA, and just ahead of Great Britain.

It was a slow start for the Skibb lads who were fourth after the first 500 metres, and were up to third at the halfway mark, and in a tight finish they stayed in third until the end, to qualify for the A final.

Their time was 6:35.700.

In the second heat South Africa, Norway and Poland qualified for the  A final.

Earlier in the week, Gary and Paul won their heat ahead of Italy and Denmark in a time of 6:23.72.

The A final is on at 2.44pm Irish time this Friday.

We’re all so proud of you lads, well done.
