A CLONAKILTY teenager has been selected on the Ireland men’s national inline hockey team that will compete at the world championships in Asaigo, Italy in July.

Odhran Bancroft (17) is the youngest player selected on the 14-man Ireland team.

‘This is pretty much the highlest level that I can play inline hockey for Ireland at so I can’t wait,’ Bancroft said.

‘This is the first time too that I will be competing on a world stage like this so I’m looking forward to that.’

Inline hockey is like ice hockey but instead of skates, players are on wheels and instead of ice, they compete on a sports court.

The Clonakilty Community College fifth-year student was involved with the Irish men’s senior ice hockey team last year, while in March he captained the Irish U18 inline team that competed in the Sparta Cup – essentially the European Club Championships – in Barcelona.

At club level with Cork Wolfpacks, Bancroft and his team finished third overall, having lost their semi-final last Saturday but then winning the third and fourth place play-off.
