The Skibbereen woman races in an A world final on Friday

DENISE Walsh will race in the A final of the women’s lightweight single sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Florida on Friday evening, 5.30pm Irish time, and here we take a closer look at the Skibbereen Rowing Club athlete.

Denise (24), daughter of club chairman Tony and Mary, and big sister to Bernadette, landed her first big international medal when winning silver at the European Rowing Championships in the single sculls back in the Czech Republic back in May. That followed on from her silver at World Rowing Cup I earlier that month as she kicked off her international season in style.

A community coach in West Cork for the Get Going Get Rowing schools' programme, Denise lives in Munig north near Lough Hyne outside Skibbereen.

She raced in the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, competed in the A final at the 2013 U23 world championships has also finished fourth in the single sculls at the European championships last year.

Here is our interview with Denise ahead of these world championships.
