A 20-year-old man was fined €225 after he crashed into a parked car and flipped his own onto its roof on Schull’s Main Street.

Patsy Murphy of Colla, Schull, was legally represented at Bantry District Court by Flor Murphy, solicitor.

He said his client was admitting careless driving at 12.45am on the morning of October 8th 2024.

The solicitor said his client, an apprentice welder, had been helping a friend and they had been working on his vehicle until 12.40am.

This, he added, was after getting up at 6am that day to attend his course at the Cork Institute of Technology.

Mr Murphy said his client collided with a parked car after he had ‘nodded off’ and ended up walking the three miles back to his house but he called to the garda station in Schull as soon as it opened the next day and admitted the incident.

The solicitor said his client has a full licence and was fully insured and was paying for this incident in other ways too because his insurance has increased to €3,600 this year.

‘He is sorry for the grief he caused,’ said Mr Murphy, who appealed for leniency on the basis that his client has no previous convictions and has a very good work ethic.

Judge Joanne Carroll gave the accused the benefit of the Probation Act in respect of a charge of failing to remain at the scene of the collision.

Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme.
