A DUNMANWAY woman has risen to the rank of captain in the San Francisco Police Department – the first Irish female to assume the rank.

Una, the daughter of Harry and Ann Bailey of Lakelands, Dunmanway, became the first female Irish-born captain ever, in the San Francisco Police Department, when she was appointed in July.

Una was educated in St Mary’s National School and later Maria Immaculata Secondary School in Dunmanway.

In college, she successfully completed a degree in Applied Science in GMIT Galway and decided to go to San Francisco in the late 80s.

She joined the San Francisco PD in 2001 and worked her way up the ranks very quickly.

She was initially promoted to sergeant, then lieutenant and, most recently, captain.
