THE streets will be alive with the sound of music this summer as the towns of West Cork prepare for some very special music events.
Cork County Council has launched the Special Music Event Scheme across the region with the musicians, singers and dancers of West Cork ready to serenade the summer months away.
Six towns, Skibbereen, Kinsale, Bantry, Clonakilty, Dunmanway and Bandon, all applied for funding to host special events throughout July and August.
‘Cork County Council recognises the contribution that music events make to the lives of people in the county with cultural and social benefits as well as increasing local economic activity, and the aim of this music event scheme will also enhance the towns vibrancy as a visitor destination,’ a spokesperson for Cork County Council said.
Skibbereen Comhaltas will be tuning up for their performances on Saturday August 13th. In Kinsale the Ballinspittle Comhaltas will be providing the music at the Jim Edwards Plaza on Friday July 22nd, Saturday August 6th and Wednesday August 24th. Over in Bantry, the members of Bantry Comhaltas will serenade passerby outside the Bank of Ireland on Thursday, July 21st; Thursday, August 4th, and Thursday, August 11th.
Each town applied for funding to hold four music events free of charge to the public on the town streets during the months of July and August, and a mixture of traditional music, song and dance will be performed during these events.
‘The interest and enthusiasm shown by the local business associations and the Comhaltas groups who have come together under this scheme should ensure a successful and enjoyable outcome for all,’ the spokesperson concluded.
