BIG plans to transform and enhance the Halfway Roundabout into a gateway for West Cork and signal the start of the WAW have been unveiled by Cork County Council.

Fine Gael TD for Cork South West, Jim Daly, has expressed his delight with confirmation of the plans and said this is an issue he has been bringing to the attention of officials in Cork Country Council for a number of years, and he is very pleased to receive confirmation of plans to enhance the area.

‘I have always maintained that this roundabout is the Gateway to West Cork and that first impressions last,’ said Deputy Daly. ‘The welcome that has been offered to tourists, that West Cork relies so heavily on, has been less than acceptable for the past number of years. The upgrade of this area represents pride in welcoming visitors to the stunning landscapes and scenery that truly makes West Cork a place apart from any other.’

The works consist of landscaping the centre area in jagged peaks.

These peaks will be created from an alternating pattern of gravel and grass, a direct reference to the rugged coastline of cliffs and crags of the west coast, all set within a designed grid.

Deputy Daly also said that the accompanying planting palette is composed of flowering crab apple trees.

‘The understorey planting is created from wild perennials and ornamental grasses. The colour composition of the perennial species will have predominately red flowers, a subtle reference to the colours of Cork,’ he explained.

Independent Cllr Alan Coleman also said he was delighted with the plans to transform the roundabout and work on the improvements are to begin in the autumn.
