SCAR was officially declared open by one of West Cork's finest sports stars, Ireland's fastest ever woman, sprinter Phil Healy (aka the ‘Ballineen Bullet') along with main sponsor Carbery Group

SCAR (Skibbereen Charity Adventure Race)  was officially declared open by one of West Cork’s finest sports stars, Ireland’s fastest ever woman, sprinter Phil Healy (aka the ‘Ballineen Bullet’) along with main sponsor Carbery Group.

Now in its sixth year, SCAR, which is a ‘not for profit’ event is organised by Skibbereen Lions Club and to date has raised c€130,000 for a wide range of local West Cork charities and good causes.

This year it will take place on Saturday, October 19th.

The race, which features on the Irish National Adventure Race Series involves running, cycling and kayaking in and around some of West Cork’s most stunning (and challenging) scenery and has courses to suit all levels including a beginner’s Taster level (running and cycling only), a demanding Sport level and an elite Expert level and attracts people from all over Ireland, the UK and further afield looking for a challenge.

This year there is also the opportunity to enter as a team for local businesses, sports clubs or groups of friends on the Sport course only.

Speaking at the launch, Peter Fleming, Chairman of Carbery Group said: ‘SCAR is a unique event due to its stunning location and 100% charity ethos. Carbery Group and its farmer shareholders are delighted to see so many organisations benefit from a West Cork event that we are proud to support. We’re also pleased to contribute to the distribution of some of the funds raised including to Cork South West Autism, Pieta House, Bóthar, the Mercy Foundation, Dunmanway Playgorund and Capuchin Day Care Centre for Homeless People.’

Oliver Farrell President, Skibbereen & District Lions Club added: ‘SCAR 2019 is now officially open and on behalf of Skibb Lions Club I’d like to say a very big thank you to Carbery Group for their continued sponsorship and support of the race which in turn allows us to donate 100% of every entrant’s race fee to local good causes. Thanks also to our wide base of community supporters and marshals. We’re looking forward to another great event. SCAR is for everyone, from beginners through to experts and everyone in between and we’d encourage people of all levels to register so they can take on their own personal challenge and help local charities at the same time!’
