SIR – West Cork Rebels 4 Choice, a regional branch of the Cork Coalition to Repeal the 8th, welcomes the strong statement by Minister Daly in favour of repealing the 8th amendment. The group is delighted to finally have a pro-choice TD in Cork SW and hope that our other two TDs, Michael Collins and Margret Murphy O’Mahony can follow Jim Daly’s lead, inform themselves and have the courage to question their beliefs around a woman’s right to appropriate medical care in this country.
Jim Daly’s statement of compassion shows he has listened to the evidence presented to the Oireachtas in recent months, and has made an informed decision based on the facts. We thank him for the time and effort he has put into considering the question of abortion, which we know meant having to face some truths which are difficult to acknowledge. We commend him for his support of women and pregnant people in Ireland.
We hope that his constituents will heed his call to ‘consider the issue of abortion arising within the four walls of their own family. What law would you like to be in place to help your sister, daughter or loved one?’
As a group we are happy to speak to any of the TDs who might have questions about the amendment and the campaign. We support Minister Jim Daly’s statement and hope to work with him in campaigning for the repeal of the 8th amendment so that we can provide compassionate care at home for the pregnant person in Ireland.
