Sitting Labour Party TD Michael McCarthy has been selected as its sole candidate to contest the next general election in Cork South West.

SITTING Labour Party TD Michael McCarthy has been selected as its sole candidate to contest the next general election in Cork South West.

He was selected unopposed at the selection convention in his native Dunmanway, which was attended by party members, including Minister of State Kathleen Lynch, TD.

Speaking after his selection, Mr McCarthy said: ‘I am honoured to be selected by the Labour Party members in Cork South West to contest the general election. It has been a tremendous honour to serve as a Labour Party TD for the people of Cork South West.

‘We have been through a lot as a country and as a community, but Cork South West is in a far better position than it was in 2011. Jobs are being created, not lost, while living standards are improving. Young people are staying to work in Ireland and not emigrating.

‘I am proud of the part we played in rescuing this country from the brink of economic collapse. But we can and must do more to make Ireland a fairer place for all our citizens. This can be done, but only by working together.

‘Let’s not throw it away to chaos and instability,’ he appealed. ‘Let’s keep working together to ensure that our recovery lasts and that our country becomes a greater place for us all.’
