Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald touched down in Bandon last Friday night to give her support to election candidate Cllr Rachel McCarthy.

SINN Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald touched down in Bandon to give her support to election candidate Cllr Rachel McCarthy, who will contest a seat in Cork South West at the next general election.

She also urged people in the constituency to support Rachel’s campaign in any way they can, including joining canvassing teams: ‘I am urging people living in Cork South West, who share the aim of building a fairer, and more equal society, to get behind Rachel and her campaign. We need you out on the campaign trail and joining the canvassing teams. Do whatever you can to ensure that the opportunity to elect a Sinn Féin TD for this constituency is not missed.

‘Cllr Rachel McCarthy is a fantastic candidate for the people of Cork South West. As deputy leader of the party, it is heartening to come to meetings, such as the one we held in Bandon and listen to representatives of Rachel’s calibre articulating Sinn Féin’s vision for a fair recovery.

‘Rachel cares deeply about her community and about the ordinary people of West Cork. It is from this trait that she draws her sense of fairness. She has clear political determination to represent people in a way that is better to what they have previously experienced.’

Cllr McCarthy, who was recently the subject of an anonymous letter campaign to sections of the media, said she is out canvassing on the ground in the hope of securing that seat for Sinn Féin. Also speaking at the public meeting, she urged people to break away from voting for parties that had so badly failed the people of West Cork. ‘Re-electing people who are happy to simply bag your trust and who then waltz into the Dáil to vote against basic, common decency, would be terrible backward step for West Cork,’ said Cllr McCarthy.

‘People should opt for something new. They should vote for Sinn Féin. West Cork should send a Sinn Féin TD to the Dáil at the next general election.’
