LISSELAN Estate on the outskirts of Clonakilty has been sold to a mystery buyer after languishing on the market for three years and having had over €5m knocked off its original asking price.

The hugely impressive house and 315 acres came to market in 2014 with a price tag of  €9m before being relaunched in 2016 when its owners asked for a more realistic €3.6m.

Selling agents Savills would not confirm the sprawling estate’s final selling price, or the buyer, although local property sources have indicated its new owner may be a Northern Irish businessman.

The French style mansion, complete with turret, and estate, was acquired in the 1990s by the late David Blackburn and family, who controlled the British Mitsubishi car franchise.

Mr Blackburn had added a nine-hole golf course and regularly opened the breathtaking 30 acres of gardens to the public.

The Henry Ford Ancestral site is also located on the estate.
