The new West Cork Mobile Library was launched this week by County Mayor Cllr Declan Hurley at his home town of Dunmanway.

THE new West Cork Mobile Library was launched this week by County Mayor Cllr Declan Hurley at his home town of Dunmanway.

The library replaces a 14-year-old vehicle which served almost 2,000 members around West Cork.

The new library will cover all areas from Beara peninsula in the west, to Galley Head in the east. Welcoming the new facility, Mayor Hurley acknowledged the importance of the service.       The West Cork Mobile Library ensures everybody, irrespective of location or personal circumstances, has access to our library services,’ he said.

The new vehicle is instantly recognisable, with its wrap-around artwork featuring winning drawings from a competition that drew almost 500 entries from primary and secondary schools around West Cork.

The new library is also fully automated, using a wireless broadband connection, while readers will be able to use their cards to request books, not only from the Cork County collection, but also from most other public libraries in the country. A mobile library card will also give readers access online to e-books, e-magazines, language learning courses, newspaper databases and a wide range of further education courses. In addition, internet access will be available on board via a public-use iPad, which staff will happily demonstrate or assist with.
