THE well-respected online publication, the Huffington Post, has extoled the virtues of the village of Baltimore in West Cork this week.

Travel writer Janet Newenham has give a massive pre-season boost to the village, with her long tribute to the location, entitled ‘Forget The Guinness Storehouse, Here’s the Best Pint in Ireland’.

Referring to its pirate history, Ms Newenham, who spent childhood summers there, says: ‘Present day Baltimore, however, is the most magical of places and a few days spent there will make even the most seasoned traveller fall head over heels in love with Ireland. Sometimes I wonder why more people don’t visit this sleepy village, with its stunning views across the harbour, its abundance of spectacular coastal walks and wildlife, its rich cultural history and all that incredible fresh seafood on offer daily. Then I remember that’s kind of what makes it so special.’

She continues her glowing tribute to the village with: ‘Sometimes I want to tell everyone about it, and let it be known that the walk to the beacon is ten times better than a walk around the Cliffs of Moher. That a pint of Guinness outside Bushes pub on a sunny afternoon would beat any pint poured in The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. That a trip out to Sherkin or Cape Clear Island on the ferry would beat any luxury overpriced cruise you were thinking of booking. I have to hold back, though. I have to keep our pocket of heaven a secret.’

Janet describes taking day trips to Heir and Sherkin Islands, competing in the ‘Heir Island Olympics’ and learning to sail in Baltimore, in her youth.

‘My sister and I became the excellent swimmers we are today thanks to our summers in Baltimore,’ she claims.
