ST JOSEPH’S Community Hospital in Castletownbere had a narrow escape on New Year’s Eve when a marine distress flare, launched during new year’s celeberations in the West Cork harbour town, landed on the roof of the building.

The quick action of paramedics Jim McCarthy and Raymond McCarthy to extinguish the flare saved the hospital and its elderly residents from a potentially major fire incident.
