AN elderly couple in West Cork have reached out to The Donkey Sanctuary in Cork with a cry for help with seven donkeys and a mule.

Due to the owners’ ill-health and desperation, The Donkey Sanctuary were contacted to help with the care of the eight animals.

Donkey Welfare Adviser Katie Reed visited the home and was greeted by seven beautiful donkeys and a mule.

‘The donkeys had all been born at this loving home, and it was upsetting for the owners to part with their pets. But this was the best possible option for all involved,’ said Triona O’Mahony of The Donkey Sanctuary, which is based at Liscarroll near Mallow in north Cork.

‘The family was comforted by the fact that we would provide loving homes for their animals and they would be free to visit them at any stage,’ explained Triona.

The donkeys were carefully transported to Liscarroll and can now look forward to settling into a life in the care and protection of the Sanctuary.

‘Provisions are being put in place to ensure that these sweet donkeys will have the most fulfilling life possible,’ said Triona.

The sanctuary rescued over 500 donkeys in 2015 from all over Ireland – its busiest year to date. See www.thedonkeysanctuary.ie  for more.
