FARMING in partnership with his wife Jennifer and son Scott, Roy Kingston of The Park, Bandon, is a highly-regarded beef farmer in the West Cork area.
In preparation for Scott’s dairy farm development, the herd comprises Aberdeen Angus steers and heifers for premium supermarket beef as well as some continental steers for regular beef markets. Described as a scientifically-minded farmer, Roy is well known for embracing technology and forward-thinking practices.
Among them was his investment in a Cattle Master Squeeze Crush some four seasons ago, which he says promotes calmer cattle and a safer environment for the operator. He is involved in Teagasc research involving the resistance of worms to anti-thelmintic doses having a great interest in how to farm with effective and sustainable use of anti-thelmintics.
Roy is trying to be more precise with rotational grazing to promote better grass growth, better utilisation and a longer grazing season. An active and founding member of Bandon's beef discussion group, he has also hosted several farm walks over recent years.
He is regarded as a fine example to younger farmers, including Scott, who studied agriculture in CIT. Next year marks the 100th year of farming operations at his farm, with his forefathers having come to Bandon from Union Hall.
