DRINAGH native Dr Seán McCarthy has been appointed adjunct professor in University College Cork.

An adjunct professorship is given to ‘individuals having a longstanding and significant ongoing contribution to the university.’

Dr McCarthy is managing director of Hyperion and specialises in designing training courses for researchers.

Since 1995, over 80,000 researchers have attended his courses in 29 countries. He has delivered courses in 74 of the top 100 universities and research centres in Europe.

Hyperion is based in Watergrasshill in Cork and run by McCarthy, a former student of St Fachtna’s De La Salle in Skibbereen. In 2017 McCarthy was presented with the EARMA (European Association of Research Managers and Administrators) professional recognition award to acknowledge his ‘outstanding contribution to the research management and administration profession’.

Welcoming his appointment, Prof Anita Maguire, vice-president for research and innovation, commented: ‘Enhanced engagement between Seán and the UCC research community will no doubt lead to improved competitiveness of UCC-led proposals and help position the institution for success in Horizon Europe.’

Speaking to The Southern Star, Sean said that his main role in UCC will be to develop the next generation of European researchers. ‘I will be designing a training programme to help these young researchers navigate the complex world of European research, establish links with strategic partners and participate in European Union research programmes.’
