THE County Council Municipal Districts of West Cork and Bandon-Kinsale have launched the fourth annual Special Music Event Scheme, a community initiative which brings business and voluntary music communities together to promote their local towns.

After three very successful years where an excellent standard of music was provided by the various Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann music groups and brass and pipe bands, events this year will occur in various venues in and around Kinsale, Bandon, Bantry, Clonakilty, Dunmanway and Skibbereen.

County mayor Cllr Gerard Patrick Murphy said the County Council recognises the contribution that these music events make to the lives of people around the county with clear cultural and social benefits as well as a positive effect on local economic activity.

‘The scheme aims to create opportunities for engagement and participation in the Arts and involves a significant amount of voluntary support from the local community and businesses which will in turn enhance these towns vibrancy and promote them as visitor destinations,’ he said.

Each town applied for funding to hold four music events free of charge to the public, on the town streets during the months of June, July and August.

A mixture brass and reed band music, covering a wide genre of popular music and songs, as well as traditional music, song and dance, will be performed during these events.

There has been a great level of interest and enthusiasm shown by the local business associations and the community music groups who have come together under this scheme to ensure a successful and enjoyable outcome for all.
