CLONAKILTY Credit Union is putting a call out to both their members and the people of Clonakilty to donate items for a special time capsule, which they will bury at the end of this year.

This is just one of many events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the town’s credit union, based in Kent Street. There will also be a cash prize bonanza of €10,000 for a members draw, with a top prize of €5,000 and five individual prizes of €1,000, and anyone who would like to be a member before September 16th will be included in the anniversary draw that takes place at their offices on October 6th.

‘We’re calling on members and the people of Clonakilty to contribute to this special time capsule and we want them to choose things that reflect the spirit of today,’ said Arran Collins of Clonakilty Credit Union marketing team.

‘It’s all about telling a story about what life was like in Clonakilty in 2016 and our aim is to capture the spirit of the presence and we want people of all ages to contribute to the time capsule.’

Anything from newspapers, magazines, stamps, business cards or pictures will all be considered and over the next four months Aaron and her team will be collecting items handed in by members of the public. We also want to get the schools involved too and get students to write essays about what life is like in 2016 and write about what they think life might be like in 50 years time when the time capsule is opened.’

From its humble beginnings at their first AGM in O’Donovan’s Hotel on Pearse Street on October 4th 1966, the credit union has grown substantially since then with over 9,000 members who avail of their banking and saving facilities. This is no small part due to the commitment of the hard working staff and also to the volunteers who have given their time freely on various committees and boards throughout the last half century.

‘It’s an historic milestone for everyone associated with Clonakilty Credit Union and it will set the stage for its continued growth and burying the time capsule at the end of this year will be an exciting event and a culmination of our 50th anniversary celebrations. There are a lot of volunteers who work in the credit union and it’s led by people for people,’ added Arran.

The 50th anniversary celebrations, including the Big Bonanza Members Free Draw take place in the banking hall on October 6th from 3pm to 5pm.
