A CLONAKILTY school principal is among those heading to Greece to help out at a Syrian refugee camp.

Carmel Nic Airt is currently on leave from Gaelscoil Mhichíl Uí Choileáin in Clonakilty, and is going to Leros Refugee Camp in Februrary, where scores of Syrian men, women and children are staying. Carmel is going for a three-week period at the end of February where she will volunteer with helping people off the boats, cooking and other duties. She will be paying 100% of her own fare and all her own expenses, but hopes to raise some much-needed money to donate towards a food kitchen.

In the refugee camp, €10,000 will feed 1,200 people for 90 days. She has started a fundraising drive and with some friends already has a number of events organised which she hopes the public will support. A campaign Facebook page – ‘Island to Island’, is keeping people informed and helping them to  organise fundraisers.

A number of events are already organised, including a Skipathon, an afternoon tea and cake sale at Bealad Community Centre and a Gala Concert at Fernhill House Hotel featuring the Clonakilty Brass Band, Cork School of Music Wind Ensemble, Hannah Collins, and other local artists. For a full list of events, see the ‘Island To Island’ Facebook page or contact 087-4445310.
