BALTIMORE firm, West Cork Brewing, will be competing alongside a number of other craft breweries in the Beoir Cask Competition at this year’s Cask Ales and Extraordinary Brew Festival in Cork.

Judged by the national Beer Enthusiasts club, the brewers will compete to see who can come up with the most extraordinary beer.

West Cork Brewing are hoping for another win, having won ‘Best Red Ale’ with their brew, ‘The Roaring Ruby’ and also taking the prize for best overall beer
at last year’s festival. Launched in 2014, West Cork Brewing is Dominic Casey, Henry Thornhill and Kevin Waugh.

Prior to setting up, the team have always had a big interest in brewing.

Starting off with home brew, they researched what was out there and decided to take it to the next level and set up their brewery at Casey’s Hotel in Baltimore.

Dominic Casey explained: ‘We’re a small brewery, but have steadily been increasing sales and branching out over the last three years. Our sales initially would have been through Casey’s Hotel, which would be quite seasonal with the tourist trade, but we have since been selling our bottles in 17 outlets in West Cork and hoping to increase this in 2017. The bottles themselves are oval shaped, which is quite novel and have been getting a great response so far.’

West Cork Brewing are looking forward to next week’s Cask Ales & Extraordinary Brew Festival. ‘The Franciscan Well is the perfect place to hold this festival, it’s a great spot for micro breweries to showcase their beer and even though there is the competition element to the festival, the atmosphere is fantastic, as there’s a real sense of community amongst the breweries,’ said Dominic.

The festival kicks off on Thursday January 26th at 5pm and opens at the earlier time of 1pm on both Friday 27th and Saturday 28th. Admission is free.
