A WOMAN who stole from two Dunnes Stores on the same day showed a ‘lack of remorse’ a judge has said.
Eve Guerin (21) with an address at Kinlay House, Bob and Joan’s Walk, Cork city pleaded guilty at Macroom District Court to three thefts totalling almost €1,500 worth of goods.
Sgt Trish O’Sullivan told the court that at 5.15pm on May 31st the accused entered Dunnes Stores in Killarney and filled up a shopping trolley of groceries and textiles to the value of €750.

‘A security guard on duty in the shop was alerted to Ms Guerin and intercepted her outside the store and asked her to come back inside. She refused however and fled the scene. All the stolen property was recovered,’ said Sgt O’Sullivan.
The court heard that an hour and a half later, Ms Guerin entered Dunnes Stores in Macroom and filled up a trolley with groceries and clothes valued at €220.60, leaving the store without paying for the items.
‘She was later identified as the culprit and the stolen items were not recovered.’
Sgt O’Sullivan added that a third theft occurred on March 3rd when the accused took €524 worth of alcohol from Aldi in Cork city and those items were also not recovered.
‘She’s walking out of Dunnes Stores with €750 worth of goods without paying for them. She then abandons the trolley and goes off to Macroom and steals more groceries,’ said Judge Joanne Carroll who asked if Ms Guerin has paid compensation to either of the supermarkets.
The court heard that Ms Guerin is currently serving a prison sentence on other matters with an expected release date of March 14th 2026.
Judge Carroll said committing the same offence twice in the same day showed a ‘lack of remorse and conscience’.
Ms Guerin, who said she intended to train as a hairdresser, told Judge Carroll that she has learn a lesson and will stay away from people who were a bad influence on her when she out of prison.
Judge Carroll sentenced her to four months in prison for the Killarney theft but suspended it for two years while she sentenced her to four months in prison for the Macroom thefts, which are to run concurrent to her current sentence.
The judge also directed her to enter a probation bond for 18 months on the Aldi theft charge and attached conditions to it including that she must co-operate with the probation services, attend all appointments, avail of training.
Ms Guerin must also attend for all addiction treatments and commit no offences. Judge Carroll also directed her to pay back €220 to Dunnes Stores.
‘The Probation Services can re-enter the matter if you don’t pay the money back,’ said Judge Carroll, who reminded her not to go out and steal the money to pay the store back.
