A DISQUALIFIED driver who works on a farm in a remote area drove out of ‘frustration’ and was subsequently caught by gardaí, a court heard.

Greg Coleman (31) of Dromcuff Cottage, Dromduff, Macroom pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified as well as driving without insurance at Macroom District Court.

Sgt Trish O’Sullivan told the court that at 10:48am on October 26th last Gda Galvin was on mobile patrol in Kilnamartyra when he received an alert for a car which had no insurance.

‘He followed the accused’s car and put on the patrol lights and Mr Coleman pulled in. He admitted he had no insurance having received a four-year driving disqualification for four years in September 2023,’ said Sgt O’Sullivan.

The court heard that he has 14 previous convictions including three for driving without insurance as well as a conviction for the possession of drugs for the purpose of sale or supply.

Defence solicitor Jack Purcell said his client previously had a drink and drugs problem but is clean and has no involvement in drugs anymore and is alcohol free for a year.

‘He works as a farm labourer in a remote rural area. He was driving out of the incorrect view that he couldn’t do without his car. It was out of frustration that he drove the car,’ said Mr Purcell.

‘He’s a hard worker and hasn’t been a problem for gardaí but has a number of previous convictions.’

Judge Joanne Carroll said it was very unfortunate for him as it will mean a disqualification.

She requested a probation report on the accused and also sought two random urinalyses to ensure that he is drug free.

The judge adjourned the case to June 17th.
