JOHN MURPHY REPORTS

A RISING tide lifts all boats and certainly the Randal Óg ship has sailed on serene waters recently.

Hot on the heels of the drubbing their hurlers dished out to Ballinacurra, the footballers continued the winning trend at Enniskeane on Friday night in this Rowa/Rowex South West JBFC first-round clash by defeating Newcestown’s second string.

But this wasn’t a stroll in the park for the Ballinacarriga brigade. Newcestown dominated possession – but they didn’t turn that into scores and hit 16 wides in total.

Randals hit them with two sucker punches with two goals inside 60 seconds in the 49th minute.

Randal Óg selector Finbarr Lynch said: ‘We were limited in possession in the opening half, but clinical enough up front.  We took our scores and came good at the end.’

Ger Lynch, Seadhna Crowley and Seamus Crowley got Randals off to a dream start and with their half-back line in control and midfield calling the shots, they looked the real deal leading by double scores, 0-4 to 0-2, by the 19th minute.

A brace of points by the impressive Martin O’Brien kept the losers well in the hunt as a beauty by Eoin O’Sullivan underlined the Randal’s corner forward’s potential.

But Randals failed to raise a further flag in the opening half as Denis Fahey, Greg Murphy, Martin O’Brien, James Curran, Cian Healy and the outstanding Rick Bradfield upped the ante considerably. However good work by Randals’ goalkeeper Denis Lynch, defenders Aidan O’Brien and JJ Hurley thwarted their best efforts, aided and abetted by some deplorable Newcestown finishing.

Points by Kieran Kelly, a brace by Cian Healy (one free) and a delightful Martin O’Brien score in the 32nd minute saw Newcestown ahead, 0-6 to 0-4, at the interval.

Brian Dullea, Seadhna Crowley and Eoin O’Sullivan edged Randals back in front by the 44th minute, 0-7 to 0-6.

With the game balanced on a knife’s edge it was Randals that seized the initiative as Seadhna Crowley sent a blockbuster to the Newcestown rigging.

From the kick-out the latter combined with Sam Kingston and following a searing foray, Ian Crowley smashed the ball home.

Having conceded two goals inside a minute shell-shocked Newcestown responded with a brace from Cian Healy.

Donnacha Collins gave Randals some breathing space a minute later and while the losers had points by Healy and Greg Murphy and a goal by Kieran Kelly in the 59th minute to cut the deficit to two points, 2-9 to 1-10, Randals held out.
