THEY’LL need a new medal cabinet in the Kingston household.

Katie (11) and Sam (7) Kingston, of Skibbereen Athletic Club, both brought gold medals home after terrific performances at the Munster Juvenile Track and Field Championships in Ennis.

To make this achievement even more special, this sister and brother double act achieved gold in the same discipline – the turbo javelin.

Katie was unstoppable in the U12 turbo javelin, winning with a throw of 23.70m, getting the better of Bandon AC’s Aoife Callan and West Muskerry’s Saorlaith Murphy in a 1-2-3 for West Cork athletes. Aoife Callan had won gold at West Cork and county level but Katie took the top honour this time around.

Sam showed his class when he won gold in the U9 turbo javelin as he set a new Munster record of 20.11, smashing the previous record by over a metre. Sam had won West Cork and county titles en route to Munster success.

Katie will now represent Munster in the All-Irelands on July 1st in Tullamore, while Sam competes in Castleisland this Saturday to gain his qualification.

There was more medal success for Skibbereen AC athletes as Holly O’Flynn won bronze in the U10 500m and then went one better with silver in the U1O turbo javelin with a throw of 15.88, just one centimetre short of the old Munster record that was broken by the winner.

Stephen O’Neill won a brilliant bronze in the U10 turbo javelin, too.

Jonathan O’Neill competed well in the shot putt, while Diana Rose Coakley and Lorraine Coakley finished outside the medals, as did Caoimhe Flannery, Ciara Delaney and Gavin Sweetnam on a good day for Skibbereen athletes.
