For those looking to see the wild beauty of West Cork from a different perspective, Bantry Bay Equestrian Centre offers treks, lessons for all levels, regularly hosts competitions, and allows for riding year-round with its state-of-the-art all-weather facilities.

A Family Passion

Owner Georgia Shiels has ridden since she was 11. After teaching her own children, she was inspired to pass on her passion to others.

"My children were always mad about ponies, I taught them to ride, we always had lots of ponies around so I trained to be a riding instructor with Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) and taught a few local people," Georgia explains. "Within a couple of years, it really took off and Bantry Equestrian Centre was formed, offering trekking on our own land".

Georgia laid out tracks through the woods where she lives, including old native woodland that was originally the deer park for Bantry House. "We started doing treks and my children worked with me until they moved away. It was very much, and still is, a family operation".

Growing Popularity

The centre has gone from strength to strength, attracting riders from Clonakilty to Allihies and as far north as Bonane in Co. Kerry. It serves a diverse group, including families, holidaymakers, schools, community groups, and competitive riders.

Perched above the town of Bantry, the centre offers panoramic vistas of Bantry Bay. Riders follow scenic countryside trails that reveal postcard-perfect views of shimmering blue waters beneath vast skies.

Lessons for All Ages

The centre offers structured riding lessons for both children and adults, from complete beginners to experienced riders. Georgia firmly believes you can start at any age.

"We have some three-year-olds learning to ride... and we also have people who have retired and who have always wanted to learn to ride. It's never too late".

Lessons focus on:

Safety and balance.

Correct riding position.

Building a strong partnership between horse and rider.

Every horse is carefully selected to suit the rider to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.

Inclusivity and Wellbeing

Bantry Bay Equestrian Centre is proud of its Riding for the Disabled programme. Georgia notes that they tailor sessions for riders with additional needs to promote confidence, coordination, and independence. The therapeutic benefits of riding are well-recognised, providing a calming environment for neurodivergent riders to reduce anxiety.

All-Weather Facilities

A standout feature is the facility's ability to operate year-round. The centre boasts:

Two outdoor floodlit all-weather arenas for dark winter afternoons.

A spacious indoor arena to provide shelter from the rain.

These facilities also allow the centre to host events like West Cork TREC (Techniques de Randonnée Équestre de Compétition), attracting riders from across the region.
